Retail or OEM
« on: January 15, 2012, 05:23:51 AM »
I'm finally getting around to place an order to Newegg to build a new computer and have a question about Windows.  I can get an OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium for $99.00 but the retail version is $189.00.  Does anyone know what is the big difference is between the two?

It is essentially packaging. The OEM is what I have always has installed on my custom built computers. No reason to pay the extra bucks.

wishinone,
Here is the difference
Retail:  You can re-install on a new computer w/o activation problems
OEM:  Has to stay w/ the first computer it is installed on.  This is not supposed to be installed on any other computer but I have never had a problem moving XP between different computers and it activated.

I will not answer a PM if I think the question should have been asked on the forum.

Thanks Carolina Mike, I just placed my order seconds before coming back to this forum, of course for half the price I order the OEM.  Now I just have to hope when all the parts arrive the instruction books have big print.

Sounds like it will be a decent machine, certainly fast enough for just about anything for some time to come.

The only problems I have ever had with OEM is support. If you install XP OEM forget about MS helping.
My brain is full. Can I go home now

Forget about Microsoft helping if you don't speak Urdu.
