Sole Survivor *****

This may be one of the best war movies of all time, certainly the best of the new crop of films about Iraq/Afghanistan. The film is tightly directed and edited, well acted, and very well filmed. There is only one drawback which has to do with the script.
The film is based on Marcus Luttrell's riveting book of the same name. Luttrell, a Navy SEAL, and his team were choppered into a hostile canyon in the Afghan mountains to kill or capture a notorious Taliban leader. The four man team were all highly skilled and motivated. An event occurred, the appearance on the scene of a herd of goats and their herders. (In the book two, in the film three) Presented with these men, they are given a series of very poor options. The choices they make, no matter which, will lead to a questionable future. They chose to release the herders, and this precipitated an attack by a large Taliban force, an attack from which Luttrell was the sole survivor.
The battle scenes are stark and violent and extremely realistic. The outcome is pretty inevitable. How Luttrell survived is also remarkable. It is a stirring tale well worth seeing.
The story as it actually occurred is sufficient as of itself. It needed no enhancements, but the script writers felt that it needed a more dramatic conclusion, so they added some bits at the end which, to some extent, ruin the integrity of the film if you have read the book. Luttrell and his fellow SEALs definitely deserve the title of heroes. They gave their all, and the choice that was forced on them by circumstances tested their integrity to a degree we can only hope we are never asked to do. It is a great story and a great film, one you should definitely see, particularly in light of the release of the five Taliban leaders last week, and the contrast between Lutrell's team and the POS who was exchanged for those Taliban leaders. It definitely gives perspective to the idiotic statements made by that serial liar, Susan Rice, in describing Bergdahl's service as being distinguished and honorable. Luttrell and his team are the paradigm of honorable and distinguished service. Bergdahl is a coward and a deserter. It isn't too difficult to see the contrast.

"Race has now replaced rule of law officially. In one speech our president has reversed 60 years of healing the racial divide and destroyed the dream of Dr. King. The result will be an exact reversal of the conditions existing before The Civil Rights Act. And the hardest hit will be the children in whose name the left always claims to act. Well done Obama". - Pendark
