Is Redbox Out?
« on: December 08, 2009, 07:11:46 PM »
For about 3 weeks in a row now, the weekly new releases have not been at redbox on Tuesdays. I tried renting online and also went to my local redbox to get the Harry Potter & Public Enemy movies and they were not available. They have not been available since midnight so I assume they are not even there yet. I keep hearing that the movie studios are fighting them because they rent too cheap and are holding back on delivering the DVD's to them. I've also heard that Redbox has been buying the movies from Walmart the day they come out in some places just so they can rent them.
My brain is full. Can I go home now

Hi Thumb

Everything you said is correct they are having trouble getting some new releases, and have been getting movies from WalMart ( they are now limited to 3 movies to purchase)   I get the inside Redbox e mail on Mondays. and they mentioned that they would not have the Harry Potter & Public Enemy movies on Tuesday. What their online reservations will say it is checked out which is not really true, cause they don't have it yet.   I have about 20 Redboxes in my area that I could easily go to and this is what they all say (this is about 4:00 AM on Tuesday)  Sometimes they get the movies in a few days though.  Also they have been test marketing $2:00 movie rentals for new releases in selected areas.

This should be the correct link for the last inside redbox email I got.  This may be the end of our .99 rentals.

It's costing me more than $2 each right mow from Netflix since they seem to be holding back.  U did get Harry Potter this week but I'm still waiting for movies released previous weeks before.  Like Kat I have 20 or so near me, I don't bother with new movies unless I happen to be at a Redbox.  I'll pay $2 for a new release, remember what Blockbuster used to charge?

No, I didn't get Harry Potter yet, they're still not available here. Don't get me wrong, Redbox is still the cheapest place to get movies, if and when they get them. There are a lot of new release movies that they will never carry so I have to rely on another source like Netflix to get them. As far as having to get a new release the day it comes out, I've been over that for a year or so now and Netflix is 90% of renting the older movies that no one else has.

Redbox is also getting competition from Blockbuster who has setup express kiosks renting DVD's for $1/night at Tedeschi food shops and Big Y stores, they sent coupons on my mail with 1 night free DVD rental and buy one get one free promo codes, I already used both codes and got 2 free DVD's.

Are the BB kiosks near Redbox kiosks?  Redbox has almost every possible location around here.

Once again, every movie in my Netflix queue is unavailable.

You have to put some that are in your queue that are available now, not just the upcoming releases  ;D

BlockBuster do not own those machines with their name on them. They are own by NCR who pay BlockBuster for using their name. Our company allows them in our stores. Those machines hold a lot of movies and our good money makers. I talked to one of their maintenance guys trying to get and in into the surplus dvds. At the time since the company is base out of Texas. He did not know what they did with the old dvds.
You must forgive them. So many people did not slay the bogey man living under their bed as a child. Thus they feel him everywhere, hence the need to always carry a gun. Living in fear of the bogey man is a heavy burden for people to carry. So sad.

The Blockbuster kiosks are not near the Redbox machines, they are in different locations. To tell you the truth, I like the Blockbuster kiosks better than the Redbox machines, Their overall design is more pleasing to the eye. They also had the latest releases. If anyone has access to these machines and wants the promo codes let me know here and I will post them.

What's the charge at the Blockbuster kiosks? BTW, I just did a search on the nearest Blockbuster kiosks and it is 106 miles away. Looks like I won't be going to them either.

Thanks for the advice, Thumb.  I wondered how that worked!

Redbox has all the good spots here.  The Blockbuster kiosks are in inconvient places.

That may be true for some of the locations where you guys live, but for me, Blockbuster has 2 convenient locations within easy commute as close as the Redbox locations, and Blockbuster has been sending me free 1 day rental codes every week..

I haven't seen a BB kiosk around here.  Rodbox is every where I go, Walgreens, Walmart, grocery stores, gas stations. I have 4 within a half mile of me.

Same here as NI4NI.
I haven't seen a BB kiosk around here but Redboxes are all over here, Walgreen, WalMart, Grocery Stores, gas stations and a lot of them are even across the street from each other.
