Is it now Clean?
« on: January 18, 2010, 08:05:00 AM »
A few weeks back when I opened the MS Explorer, immediately hardcore porno pages started coming up and a windows warning with a yellow exclamation mark started blinking.
I panicked, switched the internet off at the router.
I then scanned the pc with mccafee 8.1,  and ad-aware.(these found some malware)
I then downloaded malwarebyte Anti Malware and trojan remover and scanned the system.
These two also found and removed some malware trojans.
I don't seem to have any problem now except once in a while a different MSN page  (home page)
shows up.
The scans come up clean.
I once in a while do some banking on this pc. Also I will be doing my Tax on it and e-file it.
What can I do to gain confidence that all is clean?
Thank you all.

There is a software that I use for scanning only, ClamAV-Win. It has found stuff that none of my other utilities have turned up. It is a free utility. It is very thorough. A full scan can take several hours, but it scans everything, every file, all of it. It gives me a nice sense of knowing things are clean. It does not interfere with other virus software since it doesn't run under the surface. If you really want to be sure try this one out. You should be much more comfortable with the safety of you machine.

ClamWin found (besides some other) a trojan Crypt-292 and the name Chip.dll in WINNT .
I opened WINNT , found Chip.dll and moved it to another folder on a separate drive for temporary hold.
I rescanned WINNT with Clamwin and it showed no malware.
Am I to believe that my manuall removal cleaned this particular trojan?
Or is it a must that ClamWin remove it?

Thank you.

If it comes up clean, then you have removed it. You can set the preferences in Clam to remove any objectionable objects it finds automatically. It will show that it has done so in the script.
Trojans are a bit weird. Sometimes you can remove them manually, but like most stuff in Windows, they can embed themselves in all sorts of places and hide away. Run Clam again with the auto delete feature activated and watch and see if anything else shows up. If it comes up clean you are in good shape. I suspect that it is always best to allow the software to remove malware. It is like using Add and Remove Programs to get rid of unwanted programs installed on your HDD. It just insures that all of the components are gone.

YOu can always delete the files in quarantine. Most often that is what it does when you reboot.
